movies I like but everyone else hates by Sketch-Shepherd movies I like but everyone else hates by Sketch-Shepherd
The backlash towards these movies ALL comes from just my OPINION and EXPERIENCE. Maybe they don't seem hated to you, BUT I've seen a lot of negative reception towards these movies from my OWN viewpoint. Just wanted to get that out of the way so that people won't being saying "But this movie has enough love/is overrated enough!!"

#1. Frozen

why everyone else hates it:
"Baaww, IT'S JUST EVERYWHERE! I'm tired of hearing 'Let It Go'! Frozen SUCKS ASS and IS OVERRATED!!!11"
"Bawww, Frozen won the Oscar but my other favorite movie didn't!! Frozen doesn't deserve to succeed!111!!!"
"Baawww, the characters made a few mistakes!! That makes them HORRIBLY WRITTEN and TERRIBLE ROLE MODELS!!11"

Why I like it: Christ, where do I even begin with this? About the story and characters, I'll dissmiss that topic is more subjective. On the other hand, YES I know Frozen is overrated. But you know what? Your bitching about Frozen's popularity is NOT going to make Frozen any LESS overrated. In fact, the irony is that you HATERS are the ones over-exposing Frozen even more by bringing it up just to complain about it 24/7. So Frozen overshadows another movie you like? Boo. FUCKITY. HOO. You treat it like Disney has NEVER done anything like this before with ANY of their other successful movies. So just bashing something that's popular actually does NOT make you unique. Comparing Frozen to EVERY OTHER Disney/non-Disney movie that you find superior does NOT make you look "cool" or "hipster". I know I'm just beating a dead horse right now on this subject as I've already ranted about this Frozen bile hundreds of times in my journals and other memes. I hate The Lion King 1 1/2 as a midquel, but do you see ME complaining about it getting positive reviews or posting hateful comments about people liking it? No. If a simple movie that you hate is popular, then grow some. I know "don't like, don't look" can be hard to follow, but that's really all there is to it. If you hate something, then don't get involved with it.

#2. Home On The Range

why everyone else hates it: Because it's not "epic" like any of the Disney Renaissance movies (The Little Mermaid, the Lion King, etc..)

why I like it: 99.9% of HOTR haters seem to forget that NOT ALL of Disney's movies are dramatically serious. Home on the Range is trying to be a CARTOON rather than a MOVIE, just like Aristocats and The Emperor's New Groove. But seriously, why do people always give every other Disney cartoon a free pass while they all turn their bile to HOTR?! I find this movie to just be on the same level as those other comedic movies I mentioned. Like I said, HOTR is supposed to be a silly cartoon rather than a movie. A movie doesn't have to be another movie just to be good.

#3. the Lion King 2: Simba's Pride and Balto 2: Wolf Quest

why everyone else hates it: Because TLK 2 is just another bad Disney direct-to-DVD sequel and Balto 2 is really wolfaboo-oriented with its "spiritual guide" garbage

why I like it: I think as a sequel, The Lion King 2 pays more respect to the first movie than a lot of Disney sequels do. It avoids completely rehashing the first movie without being a completely different movie. Sure it has flaws, but that doesn't make it terrible. Also, I actually enjoy most of the songs in this one better than the ones in the first film. As for Balto 2, yes, all that "wolf spirit" shit really makes no sense to me either, but hey, even the FIRST movie seemed to draw a lot of wolfaboos' attention too! I like this sequel because it's a different story, and it doesn't completely rehash the first movie (looking at you, Balto 3). Also, I really like what they did with the characters in this one. Jenna and Boris are pretty useless in this one, but Muk and Luk have made me laugh a lot more than they did in the first movie, and I think Balto himself is what the sequels actually really improved on. He's tough, independent, and doesn't need to rely on Jenna to constantly save his ass anymore. Also, I actually like the new characters too. I think they're memorable and well-written and Niju's a pretty cool villain (despite having an ugly character design).

#4. Oz the Great and Powerful

why everyone else hates it: I honestly don't know.

why I like it: I personally thought it was a GREAT backstory to the origins of Oz.  I really like Oz himself in this film. He's deceiving but enjoy watching how he can achieve things with his cleverness. The characters like Finley, the little china girl, and the witches are pretty memorable; I can't find anything to outright HATE about this film. Maybe it has something to do with the Wicked musical or the books, which I know nothing about. I like this movie as something that stands alone.

#5. Return to Oz

why everyone else hates it: It's "too dark" compared to the original musical.

why I like it: I actually LIKED the darker tone of this movie. The gritty atmosphere is made up for by the enchanting elements and the likeable characters, especially the Nome King whom I find a cool villain.

#6. Jungle Emperor Leo: the Brave Can Change the Future

why everyone else hates it: It's "too cute" and has almost NO resemblance to the original manga and anime

why I like it: I like Leo's character a lot more in this version because he has to PROVE that he's capable rather than immediately gain respect just for being Panja's son, plus it also opens room for a lot more character development for Leo. Yes, all the high-tech computers and gadgets does jump the shark a bit but I think it's nice to actually see something new for once rather than Tezuka's story being repeated over and over again.

#7. Jungle Emperor Leo (1997)

why everyone else hates it: Ironically I've seen people hate this one because it's "too dark" compared the original Kimba series

why I like it: I like this version better because it stays closer to the manga. Yes, Leo and Lyra's deaths were very sad scenes, but I personally think it respects the original source material more than a lot of the previous Kimba series.

#8. the Plague Dogs and Watership Down

why everyone else hates it: for the same reason. It's too scary and violent and it traumatized them when they were young.

why I like them: Gee, I guess gore and violence apparently is more important than the interesting characters, emotion, and surreal themes/allegories.

#9. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls

why everyone else hates it: It has a cliched high school setting and the concept of ponies as humans is a terrible idea

why I like it: I actually thought the idea of ponies as humans was brilliant, and sure, the high school setting is pretty overused, but I found it interesting because I liked seeing Twilight and Spike in our modern world, which is an environment they are not familiar with. People also complain how the jokes in this movie are terrible, but I actually found myself laughing at most of them. (Heck, even the SHOW has some shitty humor and forced jokes too!)

all movies belong to their original creators, not me

Okay look, I haven't seen Return to Oz or Oz the Great and Powerful.  I've heard mixed things about both of those movies.  When it comes to bad Oz movies though, my advice is to fight the real enemy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1fXru…

i agree with you about The Plague Dogs. It deserves a lot more attention and respect on such sites as YouTube and DeviantArt. Have you ever seen Cats Don't Dance or FernGully? Those are also films that need respect.

Also two other things:
1. I think there's more people who love Frozen than hate it.

2. To be honest, I prefer Balto 2 over Lion King 2. Way better story.

I've seen FernGully but not Cats Don't Dance.

I have HARDLY seen ANYONE in the past year who says that they like Frozen anymore, even children. Any time the movie is brought up even ONCE, the only response is "HATE!!!111". Just look at the comments on any Disney-related things nowadays. 99.9% of them are just anti-Frozen rallies.

Sorry, but I could not stand Equestria Girls. I hate highschool settings so much because the last thing I wanna think about is school, a place where I, and so many other children, got implied that we were useless for not knowing frikken algebra.

9. Why would anyone hate Equestria Girls when there was MLP human fan art before it was even announced?
8. Never watched them, though I really should think of it.
7 and 6. Only heard of Kimba from Internet videos
5. I can definitely agree that it is creepy, but sometimes creepy can be a really good factor like The Nightmare before Christmas.
5. It has Johnny Depp, what more can I say?!
3. Guilty pleasure, along with 1/2. Seriously, am I the only one that still likes Timon and Pumbaa?
2. Definitely a guilty pleasure. Speaking of which, one of my personal favorites would be Atlantis the Lost Empire.
1. Show of hands everyone, who here still calls Frozen one of their favorite Disney films?

Not a fan of My Little Pony, Balto II, or Home On The Range (and like Fail-Seeker, found Smeghead4269's review of it more entertaining) the others I am mostly a fan of. :)

I think that the hate towards EQG had died down a long way from then. The most I see today it's people who don't like our hate it, but don't go ranting on how bad it was. I personally did like it, and the movies just added on to it. :)

Thank you so much for adding Frozen!

The reason the hate annoys me so much is because people rarely say WHY they hate the movie. They only seem to hate it because it's popular.

Amen.

Although as few as there are people who have legit reasons to not like Frozen, I'm also beginning to feel some of their reasons for hating the characters can be debunked. Things people say like "Elsa ran away from her problems, which makes her a coward", "Anna is such a stupid airhead, she should know better", "Kristoff is just a pointless love interest; the movie would be no different without him", "They only lazily decided to make Hans a villain last-minute".

What's your opinion on this, out of curiosity?

Isn't Elsa running away from her problems the entire point of her development?

The reason Anna was so quick to trust Hans was because she was raised in isolation, and the only experience with romance she had was probably from the very fairy tales this film is deconstructing. So I can sort of understand how she made that mistake.

While I do feel the main plot would've been the same had Kristoff been left out, I don't think he was COMPLETELY pointless. He was the one who took Anna to see the trolls after her heart was frozen. (Even though the trolls slowed down the story a bunch with their pointless song.)

As for Hans being a last-minute villain...ehh, I'm kinda half in half about that.

Case in point is that some of the reasons for people's criticism against the characters seem to be a tad one-sided.

I feel the same about the 1998 Rudolph....I enjoy the songs people complain about (Like "it could always be worse", which I now call the "kid friendly always look on the bright side of life") and prefer Zoey over Clarice...

But people always assume the "first" is better when it comes to Rudolph. So they choose Rankin/Bass because of it.....

Surprise motherf$&3rS! There was a public cartoon of Rudolph in 1944! 20 years before Rankin/Bass! Your argument is invalid!

Same... I'm annoyed by how people just diss the '98 Rudolph because the Rankin Bass version is old and therefore instantly better.

I also remember that other 2D short version of Rudolph.

I have nothing really against HOTR, it just didn't really hold my attention. I belive TLK2 is a bit better than TLK (while i like TLK I think it's a bit overrated), loved Kiara and Vitani in the whole thing. The Plague Dogs and Watership Down are two of my favorite movies, sure Watership Down scared but I wasn't traumatized by it and when I got older i watched it again and fell in love. The Plague Dogs pulled at my heartstrings and people should just get over the whole violet thing. Wolf Quest was OK, hammy but fun. Did not enjoy Wings of Change.

I actually didn't like Equestria Girls. It had a horrible love interest, a bad villain, Spike's a dog, c'mon they're not humans, they're anthros lacking the ears, and backwards legs. It's in a cliche high school setting, and, let's be honest here, we all know that really the only one out of the Mane Six who would wear a skirt is Fluttershy, maybe Rarity. I liked it a little, would I re-watch it? Sure. But, Hasbro could have made it a separate movie all on its own. Like I said, I  liked it, too. But, to each their own, I suppose.

I liked Home On The Range, too! How could someone not like that movie? It was awesome!

I agree with what you say about HOTR and how most are rather hypocrite with the story and characters, as if there has never been a cartoon movie EVER at Disney studios before. Again their reasons such as it not being EPIC or cows being main characters are stupid because that makes no sense, as if they never saw chickens (Chicken Run), dogs, cats, or mice act as heroes before which seems alright to them, but why the hell should it be any different with cows? :disbelief: That makes no sense. The nerve and hypocrisy of such critics. There are worse ones like Brother Bear, G Force, Chicken Little, or the Wild. Why does Brother Bear get a free pass again?

Jungle Emperor Leo made me shed :tears: especially for Leo/Kimba that we have known since his adventures began in Kimba: The White Lion. Goodbye Leo, I'll never forget you. :tears: :(

That's right, those people often get on my nerves to say such stupid things as lazy pathetic excuse to hate on someone or something, and never makes the least amount of sense. They only hate on HOTR and Cars just because they're "different" which is again STUPID (whether you like Cars or not, but I do remember past shorts from long ago that had automobile characters, even from Disney).

Oh Leo, how can I go on without you? :( You will be missed forever.

but yeah, sadly that's the case with like, everything
people have a biased opinion based off of the original content of the series or whatnot, and then other people don't bother watching it, and that's just sad ono
